Changes at CNET Co.'s Site:

Aug. 28, 1998 - We have added 24 new phone lines to our dialin system configuration at the office. This should have cleared up any busy signals during peak hours. We now have a total of 72 modems and all the modems have been updated to the latest ITU V.90 spec. So if you own a X2 or K56 Flex modem, we suggest that you flash update your modem to the ITU V.90 spec for better performance.

Aug. 21, 1998 - We added a new Modem Bank system with a 10/100 Ethernet interface to our system configuration at the office. And moved one set of V.34/V.90 modems (48 total modems) to this system and moved it into the primary spot. The orginal modem bank has be moved into the secondary spot with 24 V.34/V.90 modems.

May 98 - We have added a RADIUS Server to our system configuration at the office that handles the user dailin validations. This will prevent users from dialing in simultaneously from multiple locations. Your account allows "one" dailin session at a time, unless you have paid for more than one.

Apr. 21, 1998 - We have added a Cisco router to our system configuration at the office. This should have corrected any backward resolution validation checks performed by other Web Sites or E-Mail reception systems.

Feb. 98 - In mid Feb. modifications were made to the E-Mail server to remove the "relay" function of the SMTP Server. Some "idiot" out in the Internet world liked sending garbage E-Mail in the Internet system and relaying it off of CNET as the last Site before its final destination. Any mail rejects would come back to CNET and load down the Mail queue, causing a slow down in the Unix System, but not the Dial-in system. .

We have 14 computers (soon to have 20) on our Local Area Network (LAN), at our Office, for patron training, and general usage to access your E-Mail accounts & Internet. These machines are connected on the front side of the Modem bank, therefore access to Internet is at the full T1 rate.

Nov. 97 - As of Oct. 27, 1997 we have added twenty-four new phone lines, due to customer growth. At that time we have also changed the type of termination at the Telephone Company for increased bandwidth in the local baud rate connection, and to support K56 flex modems. For certain areas, the changes have significantly increased the connection speeds, for others it has remained the same. The modems were upgraded to K56 flex modems, too. But, I would not recommend going out and purchasing a new modem without checking the connection speed in your local area. With our new Modem management software we can tell you what your current connection rates are, in both the transmit and receive directions. If you calls us first, we can probably (60% guarantee), watch your connection speed and let you whether or not the new modem would help.

Oct. 97 - The News Groups service was on schedule, but a week prior to getting the service up and running, the hard drive crashed. The drive have been replace but not installed. Therefore, the News Groups service has be delay for a few months.

Sept. 97 - Last month we installed a new 4.5 GB SCSI Hard drive into the Web Server that would accommodate the News feed info. Currently, the newfeeds take up about 500 to 1000 MB of space, also, the info or the storing to disk is I/O intensive, but with the Pentium Pro processor in conjunction with the BSDI/OS, the computer system will be able to handle the load with plenty of margin. The second half of this project is acquiring the actual news feed for a reasonable fee. We are currently in negotiations with an ISP to provide this added service.
