Tech Talk for Dial-In Customers

Question: What modem should I buy or what brand of modem is compatible with the CNET Co.'s modem bank?
Answer: CNET Co.'s modem banks currently use the chip set made by Rockwell Inc. However, as of early Sept. 1998, the modems have been upgraded to the ITU V.90 Spec. Therefore, any brand name of modem that supports the ITU V.90 Specification or the V.34 Spec will be compatible with our modems. Brand names - US Robotics, Supra, Hayes, Boca, Motorola, Gobal Village,

Question: Why does my modem connect at a lower speed than what it's rated for?
Answer: At speeds above 19200 BAUD, the actual connection rate starts to be heavily dependent on the Phone Company's equipment and how your phone lines are physically connected back to the Phone Company's Central Office.

If you live in the following Dialing areas:

Gallup, NM - your connection rate will vary from 14400 BAUD to 56000 BAUD, the limitation will be your modem and telephone in local residential area lines.

West of Western Skies Trailer Park (Mentmore, Crestview, Williams Acres, Manuelito) - your connection rate will peak at 26400 BAUD due to a concentrator that services that area.

College Area, & Hospital Area - your connection rate will peak at 26400 BAUD due to a concentrator that services that area.

Gamerco, NM - your connection rate will peak at 26400 BAUD due to a concentrator that services that area.

Residential area of Indian Hills - your connection rate will peak at 26400 BAUD due to a concentrator that services that area.

IHS & College area - your connection rate will peak at 26400 BAUD due to a concentrator that services that area.

Wingate, NM - your connection rate will vary 14400 BAUD to 33600 BAUD, the limitation will be your modem and phone lines. The area also contains a concentrator, but I believe that it is of a newer type than what is installed in the other areas. Might be able to run near 56000 BAUD, we do not have any customers to validate this yet!

Question: My US Robotics X2 (56k) modem stalls during web page access?
Answer: This is due to a modem specification incompatibility with Rockwell's K56 Flex modems. You can correct this problem by upgrading your modem to the ITU V.90 Standard. We recommend that only experienced computer users attempt this procedure, if done incorrectly, it will damage or render your modem useless.

First, check your Computer Manufacture's Web Site for an X2 to V.90 Flash upgrade. US Robotics X2 modems built for Dell Computers, and Gateway 2000 Computers all currently have flash upgrades available for their respective modems sold in their systems. Follow your computer manufacture's procedure in performing the upgrade.

If you've purchased a US Robotics modem, then go to the 3COM Corp. site for your upgrade.

Also, we've had reports that the baud rate connection has significantly increased for customers behind concentrators. This has been seen mainly in the US Robotics modems after flash updates. Flex modem users are also advised to update to the ITU V.90 Standard, since CNET Co. has upgraded to Flex V.90 Spec.

Question: How come my Web page does not show up correctly?
Answer: First, make sure that you have created the "public_html" folder under your home directory on the Web Server "/usr/home/userid".

Next, the first or main Web page should be named "index.html". All the rest of the web pages can be named either ????.html or ????.htm. Remember do not put spaces in the file names! Next, check to make sure that all the html tags have a closing tag. If not this will cause a problem in the Web Page display.

Question: How come my Web page does not show all the graphics or pictures using Netscape?
Answer: A. When you make your link to the graphics or other web pages, make sure that your are using one word or a contiguous phrase. For example, do not use "this is my graphic.jpg" - the Web Server will try to send a file called "this", the correct way is "this_is_my_graphic.jpg". The problem is that the first space in being used as a delimiter to distinguish it from the next command.

B. Also, check to see that you have downloaded all files. Press the "Reload" or "Referesh" button on the tool bar. If you have a US Robotics X2 modem or a generic modem that uses the X2 technology, your modem needs to be updated to the ITU V.90 spec!! The modem is stalling during communications, not allowing the download of the file in order to display the contents. Therefore, this would be the reason why you can see all the graphics.
