Zuni Mountain Lodge above Bluewater Lake between Gallup and Grants NM.

Welcome to Zuni Mountain Lodge!

New Mexico is truly the "land of enchantment!" From fossilized palm trees, ancient Indian ruins and early Spanish colonias to the modern pueblos, art fairs, balloon fests and rodeos, we have it.  All of our state is spectacular, but our west-central region is truly special.  Whether coming to visit the oldest Indian communities, viewing ceremonies at the nation's largest Indian tribe or shopping for fine jewelry, arts and crafts, this is the area to see!

Central to the region is the Zuni Mountain range, just east of Gallup and south of the Red Rock formations at Thoreau on I-40.  The largest portion of the Zuni Mountains is Cibola National Forest -- 360,000 acres of pristine wilderness.  Rugged mountains, dense pinon forests and remote trails provide a treasure trove for hikers and mountain bikers.  Some areas are easily accessible by car, so that wilderness camping and picnicking are perfect pastimes.

Just imagine!  The last stopping off place before entering this wilderness is here at Bluewater Lake.  Nestled in a high mountain valley at 7600 ft., the lake is not only beautiful, but provides year-round water sports and activities.  On the nearby mountainside overlooking the lake is ZUNI MOUNTAIN LODGE with all the comforts of home.  Truly modern living in the wilderness!

Comfortably furnished public rooms provide places for quiet meditation and relaxation, or planning for a frantic day of touristing.  There's cable and VCR/video library for those couch potatoes; games, books and library for others.  An intimate dining room sits 24 while our kitchen serves the most delicious meals within 2 counties.  Landscaped lawns, gardens and space for outdoor sports are right here.  There's also moderate hiking/walking right here by the premises.  The lodge offers the finest blend of wilderness "roughing it" and the pleasure of home.

In fact, the Lodge hosts a fine art collection of eminent Southwestern painters and potters. If guests are interested in viewing or purchasing arts and crafts of the region, ask your hosts about some lesser-known (and more reasonably priced) artists and sellers!

In the continuing tradition of early New Mexico, the Lodge promotes respect and responsibility of our ecology. Guests are invited to visit with Dr. C.J. Rogers, the 'woman who runs with wolves' and Director of RAISED BY WOLVES, INC. She and the wolves are a subject for a PBS trilogy documentary on play, social structure and non-competitive behaviors. Associated with a noted educator and author, Dr. Fred Donaldson (nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his adaptation of non-competitive behaviors in child development), there are frequent opportunities for the general public--and Lodge guests--to attend seminars, workshops and simple tours concerning the wolves.

Yes, there is plenty for Lodge guests to see and experience during their stay. If it seems there is too much to do, simply ask for some advice from your hosts!
