The Bluewater Lake research facility is situated in the scenic Zuni Mountains, about nine miles south of Thoreau, NM. There are twelve members of the Research pack: four females, eight males. Their names are: BudMan, Embryo, Miracle, DayDream, Karma, Pooka, Elwood, Gossamer, Gandalf, Galapagos, Echo and Spud.

Our research focuses on wolf ethology (their behavior), cognition (mental processes) and complexities of pack dynamics. Designed to have a meaningful, productive impact on the well being of wolves, our primary goal of this ongoing research project is to produce and provide originial, educational and insightful information about wolves.

Unfortunately conflicts of interest, fear and misinformation have taken their toll on wolves in the wild. In 1973, wolves became an endangered species. Our research embraces the belief that understanding can lead to growth, healing, compassion and change. Enhancing human understanding of wolves and the complex relationship between humans and wolves--psychologically and ecologically--benefits wolves as a species. It is a target goal of RAISED BY WOLVES, Inc., to dispel the erroneous stereotyping that plagues them--the BIG, BAD WOLF syndrome!

In addition to increasing public awareness of the nature of wolves, understanding the complexities of pack dynamics is critical to the success of the various re-introduction programs that have been initiated here in the United States.

    ADMINISTRATION & STAFF
    Dr. C.J. Rogers, Research Director
    Rick Edge, President
    Tim Minton, Vice-President

Dr. C.J. Rogers earned Doctorates in behavioral Ecology and Psychology, directs and is primary research scientist for the Bluewater facility. Having lived in close association with a wolf pack for many years, she has an intimate, ongoing relationship with wolves that few humans have the privilege to enjoy. This unique vantage point allows for a level of detailed observation that, due to their reclusive nature and inaccessibility of habitat, is nearly impossible to establish with wolves in the wild. These observations, providing insights into the family life, play behavior, communication and society of the wolf pack, document important sceintific data which offers a more accurate picture of this most misunderstood species.

Dr. Rogers has been published numerous times in The Journal of the American Academy of Psychotherapists , has produced video documentaries on wolves and her dissertation, Raised by Wolves , is pending publication.

Her pioneer research has brought the following revues:

"…She understands metacommunications between animals and humans as well as anyone, and I say this knowing well primatologist-ethologist Jane Goodall, and animal play expert, Bob Fagen…"

-----Stuart L. Brown, MD, Center for Authentic Play, contributing author The National Geographic

"…Her doctoral work deserves to be published…it will make a substantial contribution to new knowledge concerning captive wolf-hybrids…"

-----Dr. Joseph W. Meeker, The Union Institute

"…She has dedicated her own life to the study of the wolf, an endangered species, so that they can be what they are…"

-----Valerie Kimble, contributing author The Defensor Chieftain , Socorro County paper

    Dr. Rogers wrote:

"Wolves are extremely intelligent, complex, sensitive, emotional, family-oriented, and spiritual beings. They live highly ordered lives governed by strict etiquette. Wolves are hunters, predators--like any animal they must eat to live--but they are also very gentle, affectionate, and comical. Live with wolves, and you will come to understand just how intelligent, whimsical, sensitive, loyal, and loving wolves really are. Watch wolves, and you will see animals who are in love with being alive."
