MOUNTAIN BIKING, CLIMBING, HIKING ON YOUR OWN The Zuni Mountains range straddles the Continental Divide in west-central New Mexico. Most of the range consists of Cibola National Forest, 360,000acres of pristine mountain and forest wilderness. With an average altitude of 8,000ft.+, we have forests of pinon, juniper and ponderosa pines. Mixed with the pines are aspens which compete with fall beauty anywhere in the world.
With the high altitude, our summers are mild with chilly night-time temperatures; our winters are sunny, but frigid. If you love snow, though, our winters are as special as anywhere!
Scattered fire trails and forest service access roads provide entry into this rugged wilderness area. Since there are few provisions available in the area, you need to take all your own along. However, you can easily access certain areas of the wilderness with an auto, then setup your own base camp to have a more intimate experience with nature.
You will see deer, elk and wild turkey. Caution, we have the second largest black bear and mountain lion populations in the nation. In fact, we have every kind of ornithological wonder and specimen imagineable. Either migratory or native, we have excellent bird-watching year round.
In fact, everything here is year-round! Snow for cross-X skiing and sledding, or water-and mountain-sports in the summer. Lots of room and beauty, but almost no one else here!
